Spring Cowl Pattern | MyCraftyMusings

I’ve named this  cowl “Spring”  after the season I made my first one in.  I know a wool cowl in Spring is a bit odd but Ireland’s weather can get pretty chilly at any time of year. Especially when walking the dogs on a windy day!!!

In Spring & Summer I just wear it with a jumper for added warmth as I hate my neck to be cold, but it’s especially nice in Autumn and Winter as it fits instead the collar of your jacket adding another layer of insulation.

It is a very quick pattern to make and uses simple stitches so is perfect for a beginner.

Materials:

Yarn: Chunky,  with as much wool in the mix as you can handle against your skin.

Hook: 7mm

Stitch marker (I use a curtain hook)

Stitches & Abbreviations:

Chain Stitch (ch)

  1. Wrap the yarn over the hook in an anticlockwise direction (or hold the yarn still and manoeuvre the hook).
  2. Draw the yarn through to form a new loop without tightening up the previous one.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

  1. Insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook, yarn over the hook, draw the yarn through the chain and the loop on the hook in one movement.

Double Crochet (dc)

  1. Insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook, yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through the chain only
  2. Yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through both loops on hook.

Foundation Double Crochet (fcdc)

  1. Make a slip knot, chain 2.
  2. Work hook into the V of the first stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull through stitch.
  4. Yarn over and pull through one loop.
  5. Yarn over and pull through next two loops.
  6. Repeat steps 2 – 5 until desired number of stitches is reached

Treble (tr)

  1. Yarn over hook and insert hook into 4th chain from hook.
  2. Yarn over and draw through the chain only.
  3. Yarn over and draw through the first 2 loops only.
  4. Yarn over and draw through the last 2 loops on the hook.

Pattern:

*This pattern is worked in the round*

Row 1:            fcdc 55, sl st ends together.

Alternatively, Ch 55, sl st ends together, dc 55

Row 2:            ch 3 (counts as tr) tr in each fcdc across, sl st in top ch 3 to join

Row 3-17:      Repeat round 2

Row 18:         ch 1, dc in each dc across, sl st to join.

A nice variant of this pattern is to alternate front post and back post trebles for rows 2-17 to create a textured effect.

Notes:

When sewing in the yarn end from the start of row 1 use it to stitch together the gap between the first and last foundation double crochet stitches.
